How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Yacht for a Day in South Africa?

By : Carla Wardle / Updated: February 27, 2026

A day on a yacht is one of the best things you can do in South Africa. What you pay depends on the boat, the stretch of coast and the season. We run charters out of Cape Town every day, so here are real 2026 rates from our fleet, plus what to expect in Knysna, Hout Bay, Langebaan and Durban.

Types of Yachts and What They Cost in 2026

Most South African charter boats charge per hour with a 2 or 3 hour minimum, and a few offer half-day or full-day packages. Here's how it looks on our Cape Town boats.

Low Range Boats

  • What it costs: Le Cat Catamaran is R7,000 an hour for up to 12 guests. On Isabella Sailing Adventure (8 guests), a 2-hour sail is R9,000, a half day of about 4 hours starts at R15,000, and a full day of around 7 hours is R20,000 with meals, drinks and wine pairing included.
  • Good for: Couples, families and small groups.

Mid Range Boats

  • What it costs: Catamarans for 30 to 50 guests, such as Serenity One, Enigma, IQ and Explore, run from R12,100 to R17,500 an hour in 2026. IQ Catamaran, for example, is R16,500 an hour in summer with a 2-hour minimum. Half and full days are quoted on request.
  • Good for: Birthdays, office outings and bigger groups.

Luxury Yachts

  • What it costs: Princess Emma is R20,867 an hour in summer with a 3-hour minimum, which comes to about R62,600. Only One Yacht is R32,000 for 2 hours, or R72,730 a night if you'd like to sleep on board.
  • Good for: Special occasions, with plush cabins, a flybridge and attentive crew.

What Changes the Cost of a Day on a Yacht

  • Season: October to March is peak season. Several Cape Town boats charge more in summer. IQ Catamaran is R12,375 an hour from April to August and R16,500 from September.
  • How long you go out: Longer charters are often priced below the straight hourly rate, so ask for a half-day or full-day quote.
  • Group size: The bigger catamarans have a higher rate for larger groups. Tigger 2, for instance, is R21,600 an hour for up to 20 guests and R29,425 an hour for 41 to 65.
  • Extras: Catering, drinks, water toys and entertainment are added on top.

Popular Destinations for Yacht Hire in South Africa

  • Cape Town: The busiest charter scene in the country and home to our fleet. Boats leave the V&A Waterfront and Granger Bay for Clifton, Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, often with seals and dolphins for company.
  • Hout Bay: A fishing harbour 30 minutes from the city, close to Duiker Island's seals. See our Hout Bay boat charters. Maximillien Sailing Yacht is R16,850 for a 3-hour charter.
  • Knysna: The lagoon is calm and sheltered, and the famous Heads mark the way out to sea. On our Knysna boat charters page you'll find the Outeniqua Sloop Sailing Yacht at R10,120 an hour (R11,040 from December 2026), 2-hour minimum.
  • Langebaan: About 90 minutes up the West Coast, Langebaan Lagoon has warm, shallow, turquoise water. We list the Nirvana Houseboat there for overnight stays on the lagoon. Get in touch for a quote on your dates.
  • Gansbaai: Best for marine wildlife rather than yachts. The Whale Watching and Marine Safari in Gansbaai is R3,340 per person including return transfers from Cape Town, and shark cage diving is R4,655 per person.
  • Durban: Warm Indian Ocean water, long beaches and a lively harbour. See below for what to know.

Yacht Hire in Durban: What to Know

We get asked about yacht hire in Durban a lot, so here's a straight answer: our boats are based in Cape Town, Hout Bay, Knysna and Langebaan, and we don't currently run charters in Durban. It's still a lovely place to get out on the water.

  • Where boats leave from: Most Durban charters leave from the harbour area near the Point and uShaka, and many are sport-fishing or sunset boats rather than large luxury yachts.
  • When to go: The water stays warm for most of the year, which makes swimming stops far more inviting than in Cape Town. Mid-year is famous for the sardine run and passing humpback whales along the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
  • What to check: Ask whether the price covers skipper, fuel and harbour fees, and how many guests the boat is licensed for.

If your trip takes you to the Western Cape as well, a day on the water in Cape Town is well worth adding. You get the widest choice of boats in the country, from a R720 shared sunset cruise to a full day on a luxury motor yacht. Our guide to the top yacht destinations in South Africa covers more of the coastline.

Tips for a Great Day on a Yacht

  • Book in Advance: Summer weekends and December sunsets fill up fast.
  • Check Reviews: Go with an established charter company that has properly licensed boats and qualified skippers.
  • Customize Your Trip: Tell us what the day is for, a sunset for two or a family swim at Clifton, and we'll plan the route around it.
  • Keep the date flexible: Wind decides a lot on our coast.

FAQs

  1. What is included in the cost to hire a yacht for a day?
    • On our boats the price covers the yacht, skipper and crew, fuel and the standard facilities on board. Catering, drinks and water toys usually cost extra, though some luxury yachts and the full-day sailing packages include food and drinks.
  2. Do I need a boating license to hire a yacht?
    • No. Every charter comes with a professional skipper who handles the navigation.
  3. Can I bring my own food and drinks on board?
    • Some boats allow it, and some charge corkage. Many have a bar on board, and we can arrange catering for an extra fee.
  4. What should I pack for a day on a yacht?
    • Sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, a towel, a warm layer for the trip home and any medication you need. Bring a camera too, because the views off Clifton and Camps Bay are hard to beat.
  5. Are pets allowed on board?
    • It depends on the boat, but most charter boats don't allow pets.
