This guide covers the local rules, how hiring works, what it costs and how to add jet skis to your yacht charter.

Granger Bay, Cape Town: Calm water, ideal for beginners. You can hire a jet ski directly from shore with a few options to choose from: 1 person – 1 jet ski – 1 hour, 2 people sharing 1 jet ski (30 minutes each) or 3 people sharing 1 jet ski (20 minutes each). On our Jet Ski Experience, it's R2,400 for 30 minutes or R3,000 for an hour on your own ski, and R3,490 for two people sharing.
Langebaan Lagoon: A bit further from Cape Town, about 90 minutes up the West Coast, the lagoon has flat, calm water that's perfect for high-speed fun. We also have boat charters in Langebaan if you'd like to make a weekend of it.
Jet skiing is a brilliant way to explore Cape Town's waters, but there are rules in place to protect riders, other people on the water and marine wildlife.
1. Licensed Jet Ski Operators
Only hire from licensed operators that are approved by the authorities and follow the rules set by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). That covers safety equipment and proper procedures on the water.
2. PWC License
You normally need a Personal Watercraft (PWC) licence to ride a jet ski in South Africa. Many operators run short training sessions so visitors can still ride without one.
3. Age Limits
Operators set a minimum age. Children aged 12 to 18 ride with a licensed instructor, and children under 12 aren't allowed to operate a jet ski.
4. Designated Jet Ski Zones
For safety, jet skiing is only allowed in certain zones. These are usually open areas with few swimmers or boats around.
5. Marine Wildlife Protection
Cape Town's waters are home to the Marine Big 5: whales, dolphins, seals, sharks and penguins. The rules say you must keep a safe distance from animals and stay out of sensitive areas, so the wildlife isn't disturbed. 6. Compulsory Safety Equipment
A life jacket is not optional. Operators have to provide one, and depending on the water temperature they may give you a wetsuit as well. On the Atlantic side, you'll be glad of it.
7. Insurance and Liability
Most operators will ask you to sign an indemnity form before you head out. Read your rental agreement so you know whether insurance is included and what you're liable for if there's an accident or damage.
8. Terms & Conditions Apply
Every operator has strict terms and conditions, including a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol and drugs. Absolutely no drinking or banned substances before you ride. Save the bubbly for back on the yacht.

Many yacht charters offer jet skis as part of a package or as an extra. Check availability when you book, and ask whether the yacht has a swim platform for getting on and off.
2. Look at Water Sports Packages
Several charter companies in Cape Town put together water sports packages with jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more, so you get an action-packed day in one booking. Jet skis are a popular extra for birthday yacht parties too.
3. Safety First
The jet ski crew will give you a safety briefing and show you how to ride. If it's your first time, they'll help you get started until you feel confident on the water.
4. Meeting the Yacht
The jet ski crew meets your yacht at a set spot in Granger Bay, and a safety boat goes out with them to keep an eye on everyone riding. With a swim platform, getting on and off is easy, so you can switch between lazing on deck and riding the waves.
5. Time Management
Jet skis added to a yacht charter are usually charged at a flat rate per jet ski per hour. On our charters that's R5,800 per jet ski per hour. Up to 6 guests can share each ski, with roughly 10 minutes of riding each. Be at the meeting point on time, because arriving late cuts into your riding time and leaves you less time on the water.
6. What to Bring
Wear a swimsuit under your clothes, bring a towel and a dry change for the trip home, and put on plenty of sunscreen, because the reflection off the water is strong. Leave valuables on the yacht or in the car, and don't take your phone out on the ski unless it's in a waterproof pouch. In summer the wind often picks up in the afternoon, so a morning slot usually means flatter water.
